THE PASTOR'S BLOG
2/1/2010
Dear
Friends,
I’m
going to devote the majority of this months’
Pastor’s Points to highlighting the needs of our
International Missions Department as reported in
several communications we have received in recent
days.
Several factors have contributed to the situation
that our IMB is facing at this time. First
and foremost, currency exchange rates over the last
two years have been brutal. Contributions from our
donors come to the IMB in dollars while
overseas expenses have to be paid in Euros, yen,
rupees and other currency inflating ongoing “fixed”
expenses. Our IMB has no control over this
issue. Second, donor income has also fallen off due
in large part to the recessionary pressure that all
of us are facing. Donor income is down 8% as
of November compared with the same time last year.
What
has the IMB done to address this need? They
have taken several steps to maintain the financial
integrity of our Mission. After freezing
salaries in 2009, the IMB made a 5%
across the board reduction of base salaries in both
stateside staff and field personnel for 2010. They
have eliminated several stateside staff positions.
The 75th Anniversary celebration
scheduled for Oklahoma City has been drastically
scaled back. Programs and special projects have also
been suspended or placed on the “back burner”
indefinitely. I want to commend the IMB for
making these tough decisions. I know it was
difficult.
The
question for all of us is, “What can we do at this
point to help?” Obviously the most important thing
any of us can do is to pray for the Mission.
Saturate this need with prayer. We serve a great big
God who has unlimited resources. He will provide.
But, we must also move beyond our petitions to the
giving of our possessions. We can do this
individually with coins banks and personal gifts to
the Mission and corporately through special
offerings and budgeted giving through our local
church. The need is great but our God is greater. We
have received a “Great Commission” from our
Lord and we cannot, we must not fail, and by the
grace of God we will not fail!
I
would like to issue a challenge to every church and
individual to do something now to help our
Mission. Write a check, give a gift, or fill up
a coin bank and send it to the IMB as soon as
possible. Our Mission needs to hear from all
of us.
In closing, let me say that we
appreciate all of the positive feedback we receive
from those of you who read the Evangel.
If you would like to help with this ministry you can
send a love gift to FFWBC or use E-Giving at
ffwbdothan.org.
God bless and keep you all.
I’ll BCNU.

Dear Friends,
What do you think of when you think of
the month of January, colder weather, a return to school or work
after the holidays, taking down Christmas decorations, (the BCS
championship game with the Crimson Tide playing the Horns)? When
I think of this time of the year I think about the opportunities
that we have for a new beginning, a fresh start, the opportunity
to launch out in a new direction. New opportunities bring their
own set of challenges. Paul spoke of the “open doors” that were
available but he also mention “adversaries” as well in 1
Corinthians 16:9. Progress is never easy and never has been so
you and I should not be surprised to find out that with every
opportunity there is also an obstacle! One old cliché is very
applicable, “No pain, no gain!” How is progress achieved? Let me
share some thoughts with you about the “pain” necessary for
“gain.”
First, there is the need for wisdom,
God’s wisdom that is. I say God’s wisdom because there are two
kinds mentioned in the Bible. There is human wisdom which is
“earthly, sensual and devilish,” and there is Godly wisdom that
is “pure, peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated etc.” To make
genuine spiritual progress we must use the wisdom that comes
from above and God has promised to give this kind of wisdom to
those who ask.
Next, there is the need for what
someone describe as “want to!” You have to have a real desire to
make progress. I suspect that this is the intangible that makes
the difference between success and failure. I can’t quantify it
but I know you have got to have some to make progress.
Third, there is the need for waiting.
This may be the most difficult aspect of this process. We know
what the Bible says about those “who wait upon the Lord.” There
is a payday for those who are willing to wait on God’s timing.
The difference between a successful running back and one who is
not is often the runner’s willingness to let the play develop,
to wait on his blockers.
Finally, there is the work. Plain old hard work is absolutely
essential to forward progress. There are many tasks that I have
done over the years that required plain old “elbow grease!” You
can plan your work and we should, but we must also work our
plan. A strong work ethic will go a long way towards making us
fruitful in the work of the Lord.
None of us enjoys “pain,” but we all
like the “gain!” Progress requires that we have wisdom, desire,
patience and strong work ethic. God help us to apply these
principles and make 2010 the most fruitful year of our lives!
I’ll BCNU.

| Dear Friends,
I hope that you
all have some good friends. Sis. Judy and I have been blessed
over the years to make some very good friends in every place
that God has allowed us to serve. God has brought these folks
into our lives over and over again. What are the characteristics
of true friend? Let’s start with fidelity and faithfulness.
Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is
born for adversity.” This verse states an obvious truth. A true
friend is consistent in their support for you, especially in
difficult times! They will support you in their prayers, in
their presence when others may have abandoned you and in their
proclamations. (You knew I would alliterate something!) A true
friend doesn’t necessarily have to agree with you but even when
they do not, you can count on them to talk to you and not about
you. Proverbs 27:6a, 9 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend….” &
“Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness
of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.” A true friend will be
there when you fall (and you will). Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two are
better than one, because they have a good reward for their
labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow
(friend): but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he
hath not another to help him up.” How can you have the kind of
friends that I’ve just described? Proverbs 18:24a “A man that
hath friends must shew himself friendly….” You can have this
kind of friends by being one yourself! You be a faithful,
loving, and loyal friend and you will attract the same kind of
friend. Someone told me a long time ago that “We do not attract
what we want, we attract what we are!” Let me close with this
thought. The last part of verse 24 says, “….and there is a
friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Who is this friend?
There is only one who fits this bill. Make Jesus your best
friend and you’ll never want for a true friend! God bless and
keep you all in His care. We love you. I’ll BCNU.

Together We Build
|
| 3/11/2009 |
| |
In less than 3 weeks we will
embark on a journey of faith called "Together We Build." Sunday
March 29th at 10:30 our church family will experience what I
believe will be a great opportunity to step out on faith. We
will be coming together to celebrate the goodness and generosity
of God and to thank Him for what He is going to do in and
through his people. We have two goals set for this special
service. The first is to give a love offering of $18,500.00 so
our building ministry fund will reach the threshold set by the
church to start the actual planning and construction of our
Family Life multi purpose building. Second, we will be asking
all of our church family to give sacrificially over the next 36
months to provide the finances needed for this ministry project.
I want to encourage everyone to pray for this special day and to
plan on attending personally. Some of you were here when our
existing campus was built. It was a great step of faith then and
we must take another step of faith today to reach our generation
for Christ. I look forward to seeing each of you at this special
service. God bless and keep you.

Christmas Without Christ?
|
| 12/2/2008 |
| |
What if there was no baby
Jesus in the manger, no Christ child, no Emanuel, no God with
us? The answer is fairly obvious. Without Christ Christmas as we
know it is an impossibility. You just can't have Christmas
without Him. He is the essence of what Christmas is all about,
but our culture has seemingly done everything in it's power to
eliminate Christ from Christmas, to subtract His influence form
this once a year celebration, to wipe away every trace of Christ
from Christmas. We see it everywhere around us. Have you ever
seen this, Xmas? I'm old enough to remember when we first
started seeing this abbreviation. The fact that this has become
an acceptable part of Christmas advertising and promotion says a
lot about how far we've come. Our government at almost every
level is antagonistic to public displays celebrating the birth
of our Lord. Just a couple of years ago many companies began
instructing their employee's to say happy holidays instead of
Merry Christmas. There was a strong public out cry when this
happened but it goes almost unnoticed now. What is the solution
to this problem? As always the answer begins with believers. We
must not settle for a Christless Christmas, privately or
publicly. We must take a strong stand for what Christmas used
to be about and can be again. We can use our voices and our
pocket books to make sure that the focus of Christmas is Christ.
Not the gifts that we give and receive but the greatest gift
that was given to mankind 2,000 years ago and can be received by
faith by men, women, boys and girls today. Let's keep "Christ"
in Christmas!
